During the summer I got a bit stuck about what to do. My mind couldn't decide and so I just picked and idea that I could do easily for that moment in time, just to start up my imagination. This happened to be hotel view, as I was already staying in a hotel.
Because of my mental state, putting too much pressure on myself would have turned me away from doing work at all, so I simply took photos as I normally would, which resulted in being the typical holiday hotel room view snapshot on my mobile phone. In total, I presented two of the images I took because it told a narrative of changing atmospheres with time of day, which I found to be an interesting angle to at this project from.
I printed these images out alongside the synopsis of; Gatwick airport is one of the UK's busiest airports. These images reflect that a time that is often full of excitement, fear and hectic feelings can also be a place of beauty and tranquility. Where we stay is important to the holiday-goer as it marks the start of their temporary escapism, and the view in which we encounter makes a big impact on this. Here we see a side of the airport experience that is lesser appreciated, and lesser documented, in order to achieve the realisation that we can experience peace in places we would least expect
This summer project was then put into a presentation which is below. This was in order to present my idea and how I could develop this. Within this presentation I also toyed with the idea of fantasy portraiture.
So through this presentation I discussed work i've already done including my summer project, which I titled Premier Inn, North Terminal and my last body of work called The Beast Within which focused on creating a visual representation of my mental health. This was to demonstrate an interest in both areas, however it became obvious to myself and the audience of my presentation that I have more of an interest in fantasy portraiture; after all this is what I want to do after university so it would make sense.
Because of this, I have decided that this will be best for me for this project. There is also a lot more room to progress with this project.
In terms of concept; I have none. However after a one to one tutorial with a lecture I have been advised to simply make work and the concept with emerge after the actual work. I've also been encouraged to look at Freud's theory of the dream, the dreamlike state, and the subconscious.
I think this summer project was important for me to at least try out and see where I stood with this kind of work - which is rather different for me. However, I feel that of my of greatest strengths is creativity and and my imagination and I am excited to be able to project that into a new project focusing on the fantasy.
