At the beginning of March, the UK went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, at the beginning of July, I have had time to reflect on how this has affected me and my work.
I have not been able to go out to shoot due to regulations, however as the lockdown has eased it is technically allowed to go out and do this. However, I have chosen not to. This is because I personally do not feel comfortable going out any more than is necessary, due to having a vulnerable person within my household. I have therefore chosen to stay inside and alongside with the new criteria with the module, continued to research and plan shoots for when I feel comfortable to go out and do so.
Instead, I have been exercising my artistic need and my implication of women and masking their identity within a small series of lockdown self-portraits;

The themes of these images are often beauty and self-care as this offers me a slight sense of control that I also get through taking self-portraits as Goddesses. While very different to my current project, these allowed me to give myself different personas, but also be a little bit rawer and show different parts of myself that genuinely exist, rather than creating a completely new character.
Due to COVID, I am also not working at the moment, meaning even if I let comfortable going out and shooting, the images would not be as I want them as I'd be working with a much lower budget - and my base budget was low as it was. I would much rather wait and use this time to plan and research and produce less than satisfactory work.
When shooting, I usually use my partner as my assistant as I feel entirely comfortable around him and can get into character well, however I now haven't seen him in about 15 weeks and so this is not possible right now.
Because of this, I'm going to end up with a lot fewer images than I would have liked at the end of this module, however this cannot be helped and the health of myself and others has to come first.
Overall, COVID has messed up a lot of the plans I had for this project, and I can only hope I have the opportunity to finish the work at a later date. For now, I will continue to plan, analyse and research.
